Melissa Lawson is 39 and contemplating turning the big 40. She believes it is time for serious change in her life. She is single mom with two kids and she wants more out of existence. But what exactly does she want and how does she go about getting it before it is too late?

On a visit to her best friend's hair salon, a simple touch to an old piece of machinery sends Melissa fingers tingling and on the way to a new life. Suddenly Melissa's thoughts become actions and she is wondering what the heck is happening. And who exactly is this drop dead gorgeous man who appears out of thin air telling her he is there to teach her to use her powers. What powers?

Brent has a mission. If he completes it successfully then it will end his 200 year life of solitude enforced on him after an error banished him into limbo. He has to teach Melissa how to use her powers. It should be easy. He's been around for 200 years. It's not like he's new to the how magic thing. A stubborn woman with attitude cannot be that hard to handle. But the discovery that he is falling in love with her is not something he counted on.

Who hasn't had a moment in their lives when the desire to change is so strong that you would contemplate anything to make life more exciting?  And how good would it be to suddenly have magical powers that allow you to wish for anything and get it. But like any positive there is always a negative, and Melissa soon learns what her destiny is. I liked Melissa. The dialogue out of her mouth was so realistic. I kept thinking that's exactly what I would say. As for Brent, although he is a man desperate to escape his solitude, he wants Melissa but he does not want to use Melissa for his own gains. She has to learn through her own experience.

I'll admit, parts of 39 & Holding made me raise a cynical eyebrow whilst other parts made me laugh. For some reason the whole idea of beings from Pluto and their machinations seemed quite funny to me. But I'll say no more as I do not want to wreck the plot.

There's a whole good versus evil theme going in the story. And whilst there are powers that are magical, there are powers just as strong as two people come together and fall in love.  I liked 39 & Holding. It  will make you want magic powers of your own.
