Anne has found herself in a rather percarious situation. She is living in a small town trying to support herself and her young son as a seamstress. That in and of itself isn’t that big of a deal except that she is living under an assumed name and praying her husband doesn’t find her. She ran from an abusive marriage when he threatened further harm to her and her son, who just happens to not be his son. She was already pregnant when they married. Inspite of that, this is a man who does not like to be bested or made a fool of and as a man with power, he rarely allows it to happen. If he can find her, he will take her back home and the price she will pay will be quite high.

Now let’s compound that situation. Another powerful, local man has brought her some silk to make into various items. These silks are obviousy very precious and rare and since she is having to work on them in secret, she has a pretty good idea he didn’t come by them honestly. The risk is high but so is the pay and she desparately needs the money. To add to the stress she is under, there is a man searching for the silks and he just happens to be the former love of her life and the father of her son (which he does not know). He is none to happy to discover her lies but she tries to get him to understand.

So will she be arrested and her son taken from her or will her husband find her, making her return home to further beatings or more? Or can she succeed in getting Dominic on her side and try to overcome these things with him at her side?

Catherine Kean just gets better with each book she writes. I have to admit that I often times have difficulty getting deeply into historical romances but this was not the case with A Knight’s Reward. Ms. Kean uses the first chapters to set the stage with vivid imagery and character depth. As you move past those, you quickly find you’re hooked and walking the story with Anne as she struggles to find some balance in her life and protect her son. The tension comes at the reader from multiple levels – the suspense of knowing whether or not she will get caught by her husband or by the silk’s legal owners combined with the sexual tension between Anne and Dominic keep the reader turning the page.
