Catherine Newbury’s father was wrongly accused of slave trading and imprisoned in England. Under cover as the daughter of faithful family servants, the Shays and Catherine make their way to Philadelphia. Keeping these secrets, Catherine has worked as a seamstress for almost 5 years now, worrying constantly about her father. During this time, Catherine’s sense of style and artistic talent has made a name for herself as a dress designer to rival any in Paris.

Carter Danby accompanies his mother and sister to the dress maker and is stunned when he meets the beautiful designer, Miss "Shay". He can’t quite place her but he’s sure he’s met her before. Her name doesn’t sound familiar but could it be from his tour of the continent?

Catherine recognizes Carter immediately and does everything she can to avoid him. He was at the ball her father was hosting the night before she had to suddenly leave England. If he recognizes Catherine as who she was, the scandal may come to light and her plans to save as much money as she can to seek her father’s freedom will be in jeopardy. Catherine knows she must rely on God to guide her plans but how long must she wait?

Carter continues to accompany his sister to the dressmaker and soon he remembers Catherine. Unbeknownst to her, Carter learns her secrets and tries to help through his contacts in England. Catherine is still cautious around Carter but her feelings start to grow for him and his for her. Catherine can not move forward with their relationship until she knows her father is safe but she has a hard time trusting others with her secrets.

Will Carter and Catherine have patience enough to trust that God’s timing is best? How will God work what seems to be their darkest hours to their good?

Catherine and Carter’s sweet and tender story will pull at your heart. The characters are human with true emotions. As Christians they live their beliefs though they also struggle from time to time wondering if God is really there. They find that God is always there, even in the darkest times. A lesson I need to be reminded of from time to time.

Tracie Peterson has again given us an inspirational romance that will keep you turning the pages. I didn’t find much that related to the 1st book in the Ladies of Liberty series, as each book appears to stand on its own. It’s an enjoyable series and I look forward to the final book.
