Jessica Parker is proud of her work as a researcher at New Horizon. Her work is important to her as she believes she is saving lives. When the company comes up with a new drug to help sufferers of hepatitis C, Jessica is committed to making the company succeed in their endeavors.
Detective Zach Thomas knows there is something terribly wrong with the new drug New Horizon is touting. His brother Jim was part of the clinical trials. His brother Jim committed suicide. Zach does not believe for one second his brother was suicidal and he knows there is much more to his death.
Neither Jessica or Zach are sure of each other. The only thing they know is that people have died mysteriously and there appears to be a cover up. As they begin there investigations, danger lurks. People are dying and threats are being made on Jessica’s life. And there is also the danger of another kind – intense attraction between two polar opposites.
I love a good prologue and A Necessary Risk certainly hooked me in. I instantly wanted to read on to find out what was happening. The book has the right edge of suspense and slow burning romance.
I found the characters of Jessica and Zach interesting. They are both quite aloof in the beginning – each caught up in their own little worlds that neither can really understand. Jessica is the contained researcher wanting to save people through analytical processes. Her work is her life. Zach in the lonely man who is fighting for justice and not wanting to risk his heart on having someone in his life. It was kind of sweet the way they finally realized how much they loved each other.
I found a lot of themes I could identify with in this A Necessary Risk. The fact that Zach felt he had let down someone he loved, I understood and I believe others will to. And what about the people we love? Do we always know what they are really thinking? To me, there was also a tremendous feeling of loneliness with the characters - mixed up with the issue of control. Can you always control everything in your life? And is control always the best thing for you? And do you accept loneliness when life presents you with a better option?
I enjoyed this book as it makes you think about the deeper things that go on in everyday life. So, if you are looking for romance, danger and the meaning of life, check it out.
