Aaron Under Construction is the perfect title for this book.

Aaron McKade’s grandfather insists that he learn an important life lesson. Responsibility. Or lose his inheritance.

He’s hurt and a bit angry that his grandfather thinks he has no direction and is immature, but he’ll do what Pop asks, work on a construction site for three months without giving away who he really is, because he loves the man who raised him.

At 33 years old, Aaron has been sliding through life. Sure he’s the president of the west coast branch of McKade Import-Export, but he’s never really taken the responsibility of all the position entails seriously. Or given those he should be responsible for too much thought. Then there’s his two older brothers who always seem to step in and tell him what to do and often pick up the slack.

It doesn’t take long for the lessons to hit him and open his eyes. Not with the teachers he has on the construction site. One being Jennifer Alvarado.

Jennifer has a big heart. She’s concerned about her community and those around her. But that heart doesn’t extend to a man. No when one destroyed her and her family’s lives years ago.

Working on the site with Aaron and seeing his progress, his growing concerns for a community he’s not a part of softens Jennifer’s heart, but she refuses to give in. It soon becomes a battle of the heart vs. the mind for her. Soon she’s going to have to undergo some construction of her own or lose Aaron forever.

Ms. Thomas’ connection to the characters is obvious. I can’t think of a better hero than Aaron. He encompasses everything a hero should be as his construction takes shape. Jennifer is the tortured heroine who thought she had her life under control until he came along. The secondary characters fit in well with the story and setting. There’s not one who didn’t impact the story in some way whether large or small.

Aaron Under Construction ended all too soon for me. While we may see Aaron and Jennifer briefly in the next McKade Brothers book I wanted more.

Though the basic plot may have been used before, Marin Thomas definitely put her own stamp on it and created a story and characters that evokes and involves the reader’s emotions. She gives us lots of smile and sigh moments throughout the book. It’s truly a great story to immerse yourself in and enjoy.

Marin is an author not to be missed and an author to watch out for in the future, as each book seems better than her last.
