The Ursars are twenty foot tall, telepathic purple bears. They live their lives simply. Peace, honor and the welfare of the clan are the most important things to them. However, the AEtheral who had been sent to their world to assist and communicate with them have turned renegade and they want them out. The Clan is not impressed with many species, and the renegade’s behavior has them demanding their recall.

Spyder is the Head of the Guardian Science Support Staff. He has been assigned the diplomatic mission to get to know the Ursars. He opens friendly lines of communication in an effort to let them know not all AEtheral or humans are like the ones they have known. As Spyder learns more about the imposing bears, he begins to understand that these bears value the same things he does and their respective differences start to diminish. Through such knowledge he forms a strong friendship with Korin, one of the clan.

When the war mongering Grays attack, the Clan, AEtheral and humans fight to preserve a way of life. Cultural differences are put aside when freedom and homeland are threatened.

What I liked most about Aethereal's Clans is the fact that honor, respect and friendship are the most important issues to all characters regardless of their species. Both humans and Ursars have pre-conceived ideas about one another yet they are willingly to learn and accept maybe their prejudices or judgments are wrong. If only real life was that way.

I liked Spyder as a character as he is a man thrown out of his element and yet ready to learn from twenty foot purple bears. That says something about the man. I also like the fact that the females in the book are just as equal in job position and attitude as the men. Even though this is sci-fi fantasy all the characters – their thoughts and reactions - are believable and you can easily identify with them. I find that important in a book as if you don’t believe you won’t read on.

I’ll admit I’m not a big sci-fi fan and that it took me a while to work out who was who and who did what but when I did I could easily settle down and enjoy this book.

Whilst Aethereal's Clans is sci-fi fantasy, there is plenty of romance, struggle and adventure. If you enjoy a bit of everything in your books then this is the read for you. And let’s face it, how often to you get to read about twenty foot tall telepathic purple bears?
