Caroline Cabot is pleased that her younger sister, who is being
sponsored by their aunt for her first season, has attracted the
attention of a viscount, Adrian Kane. Caroline, whose parents were
killed before she could have a season, has accepted her fate as a
spinster and has struggled to keep her sisters and herself afloat in
genteel poverty. When her youngest sister, Portia, informs her of the
rumors that Adrian is a vampire, Caroline scoffs but a seed of doubt is
planted. When the sisters meet Adrian, Caroline's suspicions are
aroused even further. Even though she is very attracted to the
mysterious viscount, Caroline sets out to investigate him and protect
her sister.
After Midnight is an entertaining historical, paranormal romance with an intriguing plot and an eerie gothic feel. Caroline is a great heroine, who is intelligent and amusing. Some of her comments made me chuckle, and I found her endearing. Adrian is a mysterious hero, who kept me guessing as to his real motives for awhile. I was surprised by the ending and hope to read the next book about Adrian's brother and Caroline's sister. All in all, After Midnight is a good read with a gothic feel; I recommend it.
