Sandra Foster is moving home. After her parents were both killed in a car accident, she is going home to take over the house and find a new teaching job. After unloading her things and falling asleep, she awakens to find herself in a car stranded on the side of the road—in Key West, Florida. Naval flyer Jim Hamilton helps her get home. On the way, she discovers she’s now back in 1972.
She spends the better part of a week trying to figure out what is real and what time she belongs in. Getting better acquainted with Jim is a real perk and she realizes she is falling in love. She’s in love and he’s off to Viet Nam. She will count the minutes until he returns. From there, several twists of fate occur and it’s questionable if Jim and Sandra will ever get to be together again. Will she ever find true love?
I enjoyed this very short story, but felt it was a little choppy. I think a longer word count would have smoothed out the edges of the story and made it a little more poignant for the reader. I wanted to ache with Sandra, but the story kept rushing along so there was no time for this. I think there is great emotion written into the characters and their lives and interactions. I just had a hard time reaching the extreme heights and bottomless depths with them.
I did find the premise intriguing and loved the manner in which the time travel occurred. Even with the stuttered feel when reading, it was still enjoyable to read.
