St. Michaelís College is running into some financial difficulties and it is time for them to figure something out before they go completely under. The Master and Bursar come up with a plan to invite some of the more successful alumni back to the college Ė in part as a reunion but mainly to solicit funds from them.
Each of them comes back bringing with them some pretty interesting backgrounds. There is everything from a Texan to an English Lord. In the time they are there, one of the alum is murdered. Portia is a student there who just happens to be dating Detective St. Just. Because of past adventures solving mysteries together, they are happy to once again be working with each other.
G.M. Malliet introduces a wide variety of characters in Death at the Alma Mater. This is both a positive and a negative. It is positive because they are a unique bunch of people bringing some intrigue and humor with their quirkiness. The downside is that there were some times that I had to struggle a bit to keep up with all of them.
While I enjoy Malliet, I didnít find this third book in the St. Just Mystery Series quite a good as the first two. There were some point of view issues that took me out of the moment and were a bit distracting. The storyline itself, however, was really well done as long as you kept your play book handy.
