Magdalen Morland is desperate to find employment, until she can
collect her inheritance. She was fired from her previous post, because
her employer's son made advances and lied about what happened. Her
cousin kicked her out of his house, and she travels to Leicestershire to
interview with Leydon Villars, Viscount Amberley. Since Magdalen
advertised as M. Morland, Leydon expects a man to be interviewing for
the post of editor for his journal. At first, Leydon is angry and
requests that Magdalen leave the next day. When the weather is too bad
the next day and Magdalen is forced to stay, Leydon allows her to help
him. When Magdalen proves to be very proficient as an editor, Leydon
decides to hire her temporarily.
Amberley is a regency romance with complex and very human characters. Leydon and Magdalen are drawn to each other, but Leydon's cousin and a very jealous, manipulative woman throw obstacles in their path. Leydon makes a great hero. He is a good, but solitary, man, who fights for social causes and has a progressive attitude. Although he lacks somewhat in social skills, he makes great progress in communicating his feelings by the end of the book. Unfortunately, I never quite warmed up to Magdalen's character. She keeps secrets, trusts the wrong people, and makes hasty decisions. Although I have known people like this, I would prefer a different type character for the heroine.
