Elizabeth Phoenix is an ex-cop who lost her partner in the line of duty. Being an orphan, she has no real family to speak of except for her former partnerís wife and her foster mother Ruthie. Elizabeth is also psychic, which has caused more harm than good. She is looked at differently by most everyone that knows her and it didnít help save her partner. She decides to work in a bar owned by her late partnerís wife in hopes that she can have a semi-normal life and do penance for getting her partner killed.

She soon realizes that her life is to be anything but normal when Ruthie is killed. She realizes this is no ordinary murder when she notices the deep gashes on Ruthieís neck. They look eerily like something only a big animal could make, but the only thing the cops notice is Elizabethís ex-boyfriend Jimmy running from the house.

Elizabeth is forced to admit what she is and use her abilities to figure out who killed Ruthie and find out if Jimmy was part of the murder. Elizabeth will be sent to New Mexico to face her past and immerse herself in a world she never knew existed and keep the world from coming to an end.

This book was a rollercoaster of a ride. The action doesnít let up for a minute. I wasnít sure if I would be able to get into this book because it didnít sound like something that I usually read. I was happily surprised by this book though. The characters are well developed and the storyline is great. I will have to say that Ruthie is one of my favorite characters even though she dies early on (youíll see more of her later in the book). She doesnít let Elizabeth take the easy way out of becoming the woman she was meant to be. She is one those great guiding women that doesnít take a whole lot of nonsense from anybody. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
