The matrons of Maintown’s sewing circle had just heard the news, the new minister would arrive soon – and he’s a bachelor! The sewing circle decided it would be a grand idea to make a "welcome" quilt for the new Reverend. As the news spread, most of the young ladies were as excited as their mothers with the new prospect, all except Ellie Newcomb.

Rev. William Locklin wasn’t who he appeared to be. Circumstances dropped this scam in Zack Hartley’s lap. He didn’t intend to stay long, just a place to hide-out from the criminal gang that was after him. Zack hadn’t had a real home since he was 8 years old but as he got to know the people of Maintown he became comfortable.

It was a challenge playing the part of minister. It had been many years since he thought about religion. But Zack was a good "salesman" and was able to pull off the scam with a fair amount of ease. Zack had never had any trouble charming the ladies and most of the young ladies of Maintown were no exception, all except Ellie.

Though Ellie participates in making the "welcome" quilt, she didn’t particularly like the idea of "trapping" the new minister. Though she did find him charming she tried to keep her distance and let the other girls set their sights for the Reverend.

Zack’s never been in one place this long but as becomes more comfortable with the people, it’s harder and harder for him to leave. And he can’t get Ellie out of his mind. They are thrown together more and more and their feelings begin to grow for one another.

Zack is beginning to understand some of what he’s "preaching". If he came clean, could he get the people (especially Ellie) to forgive him? If she forgave him, could he really make a home with Ellie? Should he run or take the chance?

Judith Pella writes a story that will keep you turning the pages. Once I got into the story I didn’t want to put it down. I was impressed with the story-telling as the scenes unfold before your minds-eye. The characters are written with very human quality and are easy to relate to. Ms Pella also shares her exceptional knowledge of quilting. The message of forgiveness is clear but not overwhelming.

I had never read Judith Pella’s work before but she is definitely on my favorite list. I look forward to book 2 in the series.
