Holly Prescott is the last of the three former debutantes to purchase her stud at auction. (Her friends Andrea Montgomery and Juliana Alden story’s are in the other two Trust Fund Affairs books.) While Holly is coming into her trust fund, just as her friends; her money is already spent which leaves her in a bit of a predicament. She will bid on the man they all picked out for her but she cant’ go very high (they will never know since their guys went first and they will have left by the time her guy comes up) and she will be able to safely go home without a guy. Plus having come off of a relationship which didn’t’ work out well, Holly isn’t all that anxious for a guy to begin with.
A bit of a complication develops, however. Eric Alden (Juliana’s brother) decided Holly is the perfect person to help him out of his predicament. After all she is his sister’s best friend and the baby sister of his two best friends meaning he has known her his entire life as a "sister" so what could go wrong. Eric approaches Holly right before he is supposed to go on and begs her to "buy" him. He will even give her the money to outbid any (and I do mean any) bid that arises. Eric feels he is much too busy at work to be involved in something this frivolous (thanks Mom for putting me on the block) and he is still hurting from recently being left at the altar. To make a long story short – no interest in women here. So, he arranges to buy "himself" in essence with his "sister" involved. Everyone walks away just fine.
Initially Holly is a bit put off just in case it makes their families upset. But after almost losing out with her low bid, Holly gets a bit nervous and takes a chance with Eric. Lord knows she could use the extra "gift" he promised her for her animals and it would get Andrea and Juliana somewhat off her back. They would just have to real careful.
Famous last words, right?!?!?
I have to use a line from the book to describe Eric’s marketing information because I just love how it is put and creates a clear picture of how this all starts. "One unbelievably desirable banker. Kisses could melt the U.S. mint. Short term loans only." I love how this is put because it described Eric in a humorous but accurate fashion. Several of Holly’s friends have been involved with Eric and said while he is short term (very short term) he is worth it because he is great in bed. This is not what Holly wants to hear. One thing she does keep telling herself is that Eric will only get involved with someone who is good for his banking business. After all, the woman he almost married was the heir of the competing bank the Alden’s were trying to merge with – it was hardly a love match.
Eric, on the other hand, knows what he wants from a permanent woman and Holly is just the friendly, slightly strange, kid sister. Yes, she is from his social circle – initially – but she has walked away from all of those trappings. They couldn’t be more different – so there is nothing to worry about.
The reason I went to a little bit more detail there is how often we all delude ourselves with what we think to be reality. I love how Emilie Rose has summed up these two individuals. Granted I may not be a past debutante (most of you either) but we can still see ourselves in Holly’s position. We can make up "realities" for situations we want to control when in "reality" truly gets involved we have little control in relationships with other humans. Interesting irony being displayed throughout this book. In fact, this entire series.
Now you don’t have to read the entire series (or even necessarily read them in order) for you to enjoy the relationships Emilie Rose has created. However, I gotta say – read them all as they are well worth it. If you read just one, you’ll always wonder how things turned out for the other two friends!
