Istabelle O'Bannon has been leading the life of a pirate. As
captain of her own ship, Istabelle has been robbing the wealthy and
giving her proceeds to the poor. Unfortunately, Istabelle has chosen to
rob the evil pirate, Horik, and he is out for revenge. Horik steals
something from Istabelle and she writes to her cousin, Mangan, to get
his aid in retrieving it. Mangan, who is a powerful warrior, has sought
refuge at a monastery for one year. Because Mangan has two months left
on his promised year at the monastery, he is torn about going to
Istabelle's aid. When Ruark Haagan brings his brother to the monastery
for medical aid Ruark agrees to go in Mangan's place for free medical
care. Thus, starts adventurous love story with some mistaken identity.
Beyond The Wild Wind is an action-packed romance with a great hero. Ruark is a tough mercenary, who has been hardened by life and keeps his softer side hidden. I loved the fact that a very young Ruark took pity on an orphaned toddler and raised him as a brother. On the other hand, Istabelle was at times annoying. Istabelle is strong and independent, but, also, hot-tempered and impulsive. One other fact about the book that perturbed me, was Istabelle's continued resistance to a relationship with her cousin. I don't think there was a stigma attached to marriages between cousins in medieval Scotland.
All in all, Beyond The Wild Wind is a nice read, especially for the reader of pirate romances.
