Michael is just a business man in New York. He is there to facilitate a merger between his company and another which will keep his company afloat. Unfortunately, the new company has changed their mind about the merger which leaves Michael feeling really unsettled. His plane doesn’t leave until the next day so he isn’t sure what to do with himself.
A major crisis of faith and beliefs happens for Michael on this trip. He isn’t sure any longer if fighting for his company is worth it, if his marriage is worth it, if his family is worth, well…just pretty much everything. As he sits in a bar that evening wondering about it, he sees Jasmine. Jasmine is mysterious, beautiful, captivating and extremely available. She gives him a card when he politely tells her he is married (which doesn’t bother her by the way).
That card weighs heavily in Michael’s pocket as the evening wears on and he finally breaks down and calls the number. Jasmine is excited to hear from him and asks him to meet her at another club. Every instinct in him is telling Michael that he has no business doing this but the allure is just too great and he finds himself in a situation that is far (and I do mean FAR) from what he imagined.
I want to stop at this point because I truly don’t want to give any of the events away. He jumps from the pan, not just into the fire, but straight into the gas-line with a lighted match. Travis Thrasher writes in a way that is both intriguing and a bit confusing. His words are fast-paced and clear. The chapters are documented by the time so you keep up on where he is time wise in the evening. There were just a couple of times that I had to make myself slow down so that I was on time and a couple of times I had to re-read just to make sure I understood exactly where Michael was at that moment in time.
I enjoyed the insights Travis gave us into Michael’s mind. I have to say I haven’t read many books from a "man’s" point of view and I found that very interesting. Although he was a man and I obviously am not, I wondered in the beginning if I could truly relate to him. I found though that I could put myself in his place and didn’t have difficulty understand what was driving him. Michael had some really hard choices to make but Travis handled it beautifully.
This book would be great book for couples to read to lead to some discussions (possibly even a couple’s or male/female book club).

Note: I thought since this book was primarily from a man’s point of view that I would ask my husband to read it as well. He gave it a score of 4.5 and here are his comments...
56 Minutes. That’s amount of time it takes a man to digest bitter news at work, and turn that disappointment into a blind, headlong rush into the very sort of actions he would never have thought possible. Travis Thrasher has created a very credible look inside the deepest thoughts and desires of so many men today, that gnawing hunger that leads to mental games of ‘what if?’ One man’s experience here, what starts out as a seemingly impulsive move; leads to a night he will never forget and provides a rich backdrop for us all. This book is an outstanding reminder of the danger of playing with fire, and to remember that things are seldom what they seem.
