It is 1748 of the Third age, Rhyden Fabhcum, Elf and Ambassador, sets out after receiving a message from Queen Qynhelein. But this is no ordinary message. It is one he feels in his heart and hears in his mind. It is a plea of help from the woman he loves, the one who can never love him as he wants her to.

Kaevir McLeod receives a message as well but this one is telling him he is the 'chosen one'. Although he is unaware of his destiny, he feels compelled to set off on a journey to find it. Two friends join him on his travels. Together the three of them find fun and profit along the way, as the Highway Gentlemen, making travelers stand and deliver their goods.

Isabenna Gabhlan, Ambassador, is on her way to Belgaeran for a meeting. She acts on behalf of her people and in her late father stead. Calidore, her unwanted suitor, travels with her trying to press his attentions upon her. However there is another Isabenna loves and she will do anything to save.

Once in Belgaeran, Neisrod, the Abhacan King, quickly informs the travelers that the Shadow Stone has been stolen. The Stone is a force of great evil. The one who possesses it can control the elements. The Book of Shadows, which Kierken, King of Tiraliann has, is linked to the Stone. Neisrod wants the Book of Shadows destroyed to stop any danger befalling their respective lands. Kierken, who is trying to decipher the ancient tome, wants to save it as he believes the knowledge contained in the Book of Shadows is important and could benefit all.

To me, Book of Thieves is a mixture of medieval fantasy, honor, romance and chivalry. But it also has a futuristic and magical theme as the characters battle evil.  I really liked the character of Rhyden who is honor bound to do the right thing even if it denies him what he wants most. I also was quite impressed with myself when I started to understand what the language and phrases meant in the book as I read on. This is entirely due to the fact that the author provides the meanings of the language.

I'll admit, I stumbled over some of the names until I got used to them. However once I did I was fine. The author kindly provided me with the first two books in this series. Whilst they were good for background, I don't feel it is necessary to read them first as Book of Thieves stands alone as any background questions are easily answered as the story unfolds.

Book of Thieves is adventure, magic and romance. If you enjoy an escape into the world of fantasy is well worth the read.
