Caroline Hampton has coped with a lot of things recently. First, her husband of less than a month is killed in an automobile accident after a huge fight with her. Then she realizes she’s being followed and watched both at work and at home. When confronted by a thug who threatens her and tells her she will have to pay up the $100,000 her husband owed him, she doesn’t know what to do. So she flees New Mexico and heads for the last place she ever wanted to be---home.
Caro is welcomed home by her sisters and grandmother. They are thrilled to have her return to Amish country and to stay with them at the family home turned B&B. However, trouble seems to follow her from New Mexico and the handsome police chief, Zachary Burkhalter, seems to think that she might be the cause of the trouble. He’s watching her and waiting to see what happens.
Can Caro trust him and allow him to help her? Can Zach keep his professional demeanor around her?
Zach and Caroline appear to be polar opposites. He’s as straight-laced as she is free-spirited. Can these polar opposites attract? Will they ever be able to trust each other enough to share their feelings? As they try to find out the truth about Tony’s supposed death, more and more strange things are happening to Caroline. Sometimes it looks like she could be losing her mind. Other times, it looks like she’s trying to cover her own trail. Either way, it’s very suspicious to Zach. He’s keeping an extra close eye on her and her actions, but who will keep an eye on his heart?
While the drama and suspense drove the storyline, I was touched by the depth of emotions Ms. Perry conveyed through the story. I agonized with Caro as she tries to make a new life for herself and put the past behind her. I knew how the conflict of interest Zach had in helping Caro made him rethink his own life. This book was so well written and the characters so real that I couldn’t put it down. The simplicity and depth of their love moved me and stayed with me after reading their story.
