When Breena Murphy walks through the fireplace at the abandoned Apollo Cake factory little does she know that she is walking into a world that will change her life forever. Is this time travel or destiny? And why is she instantly faced with one man who wants to kill her and another who is not the slightest happy to see her?
Rune is only too aware who Bree is and what is her destiny is meant to be. It is his job to protect her. Bree is one of the most ‘likely.’ Unbeknown to her she is Yew and she has been brought to Cake to fulfil a prophecy. However Rune would be just as happy if she chose to leave as some of the other most ‘likely’ had.
Bree is fascinated by the land of Cake and despite Rune’s dislike of her she isn’t about to turn around and leave. She has no one who will miss her in Boston and the world she has stumbled into is too compelling to leave. Unaware of her true destiny, Bree is sent on a journey with Rune. When she becomes aware of the prophecy pieces of her life start to fit together to give her a clearer of who she is. She must prove herself and save a land from evil.
Cake: A Fairy Tale is a very different type of romance. It has an Odyssey type feel about it as Bree and Rune encounter weird creatures and dangers on their quest. I liked the fact that Bree really did not know what she was doing in Cake yet she decided to take a chance on adventure and Rune, the man she begins to fall in love with. As for Rune, he is reluctant hero who knows his job is to save Bree while trying hard not to love her. The romance is sweet between these characters because it’s the classic case of two people misunderstanding each other.
There is a lot of tragedy, humor and great characters in this book. Villen is such a nasty, evil character that I really quite liked him as he was portrayed so well. Characters like Mrs Mac were interesting as the story of their lives wove in well with the quest like feel. As for the creatures know as ‘Dreds – all I can say is these are not the sort of creatures you ever want to come face to face with. They were quite chilling and I won’t look at a grater again the same way.
I did find it a bit confusing at the start as there is a lot of information to take in but it’s necessary information to understand the unfolding story so it’s well worth paying attention.
I found Cake: A Fairytale a really refreshing read. There is plenty of action, lots of magical creatures and sweet romance. It’s all about reality meeting fantasy and realising maybe that two aren’t really that different. If you want a book that’s beyond the norm and you believe in Camelot, elves and magic you will love this book.
