For seven hundred years Julen, Captain of the Quinguard and warrior of the Agathyrsi Tribe, has been cursed to stand as a granite gargoyle every night. Only one person can end his torment. She is his neighbor and she’s also a healer. However to heal him she will have to undergo the ‘mingling’. Is she strong enough for this? And will she even allow him into her life?
Sofia Evans had been warned by her gypsy grandmother to be aware of warriors of the Agathyrsi Tribe. She has an ancient parchment that confirms that they have a blood thirsty reputation. It is Sofia’s duty to eliminate any member of the clan. But Julen is different. Immediately she is stirred by him. Can she kill the man that she is falling in love with? And how does one kill an immortal warrior?
Julen is aware that Sofia’s family legacy is to eliminate his kind from the face of the Earth. However little by little he starts to gain her trust and her love. However winning Sofia over is not Julen’s only problem. An ancient enemy lurks and that enemy is aware of Julen’s attachment to Sofia. Can Julen be healed and save the woman he loves?
I really enjoyed Cast in Stone from start to end. I found it to be one of those books that gets you in right at the beginning and keeps you reading. The characters are convincing and I think this is what holds a readers interest. Sofia is strong and capable yet she is faced with the need to choose between her family’s teachings and the man she is falling in love with. As for Julen he is the strong, stoic warrior who wants Sofia but he knows what he is may hurt her. They are complex characters who have to make difficult choices. While it is paranormal romance, anyone who enjoys good romance with a well thought out plot will enjoy this.
I love the concept that a man has been cursed to stand as a granite gargoyle and that only one person can free him. The idea of the ‘mingling’ was most interesting. I won’t spoil the story but I kept thinking it sounded both good and bad at the same time. But then that’s what Cast in Stone is like. To me I found it to be a story of extremes. It’s a story of craving what you have been warned is wrong, about wanting to heal when destruction should be the only course of action and whether someone you know in your heart is good is really guilty of terrible crimes.
This is Book 1 in a series about the Quinguard Immortals. If the following books are as good as the first it will be an excellent series and a must have for those who believe in soul mates. I for one will never look at gargoyles in quite the same way again.
