Elizabeth Phoenix is slated as the Leader of the Light in the upcoming Apocalypse. Liz is a seer who is able to see beneath the mask of the enemy to see their true form, that of the Nephilim. The Nephilim are Satan and the other angels that fell from Heaven when Jesus cast them out. They are now rising to get out of their prison and populate the world with evil and bring about the end of days. Lizís mission is also that of demon slayer. She can not only see them for what they are, but has the means and tools necessary to kill them. The forces of good are seriously depleted and Liz must find more demon killers before their time runs out for good.
Liz also finds she has another set of problems to contend with. She has found her long-lost mother who is on the side of evil and in order to kill her, Liz must kill the one person she loves most. She must kill Sawyer, the man who helped her control her powers and grow into the person she is today. Liz is now haunted by Sawyer in her dreams and by his child that is now under her protection. Added to that is her former lover Jimmy, who is now a vampire and his new lover Summer. She must learn to trust those that have done her wrong in the past in order to survive the future.
I donít normally veer to the books with Armageddon themes, but I have found this series to be a fresh, exciting new turn on old prophecy. I am a big fan of Elizabeth Phoenix. She is a strong central character that no matter how hard you put her down she keeps coming back swinging. She takes the lot she has been given as the Leader of the Light and does everything she can to give humankind a fighting chance. Of course no story would be complete without a classic love triangle. Liz is torn between her first love Jimmy and her new love Sawyer. Of course the two men cannot stand each other, which just fuels the story even more. Liz realizes that both men have attributes and advice that she needs in order to successfully beat the Nephilim. I am eagerly anticipating the next nail biter in Lori Handelandís series.
