I congratulate Ms. Poff on a historically accurate work of fiction. Set during the Civil War, Lieutenant Colonel James Andrew Hastings (Andrew) is sent to New Orleans to do a little scouting around to see if it looks like the war will break out. When he literally runs into Jessica Templeton (Jessie), his life is forever changed. They fall instantly in love with each other and are married in a rapid fashion. Hard to imagine a Union soldier marrying a southern belle, but that’s how hearts work.

However, the war intrudes on the newlyweds and Andrew has to leave his new bride to attend to matters of urgency for the Union. From here, the story rapidly turns into one of survival and mental grit. I feel I must warn readers of a little bit of the storyline as it may affect some readers decision to read/not read the book. Jessie is attacked at home by rogue Union soldiers and taken as their captive. She is humiliated by these men and repeatedly gang raped by them. At first, I thought the initial scene was too graphic. Yet, when I reread that section, I realized that Ms. Poff has a unique ability to get the reader to use his/her imagination to fill in the blanks. She actually doesn’t describe much, but leaves it to you. I have an incredibly vivid imagination so I had trouble sleeping after reading this before bed. If you have ever been sexually attacked, you will need to decide if you can let your imagination go there.

Once Andrew finds out that Jessie has been taken, he begins a manhunt for the men and to reclaim his wife. Never tempt a man who desperately loves his wife and would lay down his life for her…especially a secret agent in the army.

Overall, this is an incredible love story that shows how two people can truly connect with each other in love. Andrew is a recluse by nature and swore he’d never open himself up to another person again. Yet, here he is, chasing after his wife and trying to save her before she is killed. If you enjoy historical novels—especially the Civil War era—you won’t be disappointed. I truly enjoyed the story and watching Andrew come to realize the depths of his feelings for Jessie. Jessie turned into a picture of true grit and determination. From Southern Belle to potential candidate for the Survivor TV show. Enjoy watching them as they yearn and search for their love to be reunited.
