Daniel Klein is living in Italy with his young son and working in a vineyard. He has made his life simple and uncomplicated. He is an artist who has lost direction and faith in his abilities. He is looking for something he is not even sure he needs anymore. When the love of his life, Kathleen Petersen turns up in Italy on a vacation he is stunned. Four years of misunderstanding and missed chances separate them. They were torn apart by circumstance and fate but is their love strong enough to survive the years apart?
The last person Kathleen expected to see is her ex-lover Daniel. She is on vacation with her child and her friends. He is the man that captured her heart then broke it when he was forced to leave her for another woman. She is reluctant to allow herself to fall for Daniel again. She had learned to stand on her own two feet after some hard life lessons. But does she have any choice especially when those who love her go out of their way to bring her and Daniel back together again? They were good together once but can they re-live that magic?
I have to admit I was slightly confused at the start of Coming Home the Long Way as it jumped from the prologue in New York to a vineyard in Italy. But not confused enough that I did not instantly want to know what was going on as I am naturally a sticky beak and need to know everything. However I soon worked out who, what and why and easily slid into the story. There is something endearing about the sense of ‘meant to be’ when it comes to the two lovers re-uniting.
The main characters, Kathleen and Daniel, to me, come across as everyday people living through everyday, angst -ridden things, so it is easy to relate to their story. You can see why they are struggling and why they are scared to take a chance again. The two characters I particularly liked were Patrick and Ralph, the gay lovers, who are traveling with Kathleen. They come across as warm, loving and real. I could feel the heartache that these two men faced. And the character of Sylvia is just perfect to hate.
Coming Home the Long Way is about the endless changes that can happen in anyone's life and how the characters handle what comes their way. Love, kids and friends all add to the mix. If you believe that some people belong together no matter what obstacles they face then you will enjoy this story.
