Essie Spreckelmeyer was known to be independent, a bit impulsive and, well, eccentric but she was an upstanding citizen and came from a good family. Essie was famous for her peculiar hats and her love of her bicycle which she rode everywhere. She didn’t think twice that her hats may cause some to stare or her cycling clothes may be scandalous. Thus she was accepted by all as the eccentric daughter of the town judge.

She had turned 30 years old and was tired of waiting on the Lord to send her a husband. All she’s wanted her whole life was a husband, children and a home of her own. It was time to help the Lord with finding her a husband.

Essie’s first attempt ended in disappointment. Her second attempt, which she thought was true love for both of them, ended in heartbreak and left her reputation ruined to those who knew and questionable by those who heard the rumors.

Then it happened! Just what she’d been waiting for, a man asked her to marry him without her chasing him. But she didn’t love him and she could ruin his life-long pursuit to serve the Lord because of the facts of her reputation.

Now she had a decision to make. Could she marry and live her life without love, true love? It didn’t feel right, but this is what she’s always wanted. How could the Lord send Essie her heart’s desire and it feel wrong? What was God’s will? What did He have in store for Essie and could she accept His will over her own?

Deeanne Gist once again writes a story of a very independent woman. Though Essie is not my kind of heroine, she’s likeable and strong in her beliefs. Essie’s struggle with her will or God’s will was thought provoking and makes you think of your own relationship with God.

This novel is not necessarily a romance in the traditional sense as it doesn’t end like you would expect most romances to end. With that said, Ms. Gist’s story-telling is descriptive with just enough detail to make the scenes unfold. Its obvious Ms. Gist did her research as her descriptions are specific to the setting and time of the story.

Courting Trouble is a book that will make you laugh and cry as your heart is pulled in many directions. So if you’re looking for an inspirational story of an independent woman who wants God’s will for her life, Courting Trouble is the book for you.
