Alison Forester is working on finalizing the details for the new burn center she is striving to get opened at the hospital where she works. She knows that the perfect doctor to lead the surgery team is Nicholas Sheppard but for some reason he has dropped out of the hospital scene. She tracks him down to a dude ranch. When approaching him to think about the position, however, Nick had no problem telling her no and meaning it. Since she is due for a vacation anyway, Alison checks into the dude ranch to see what she can do – after all this is a win-win situation. She will get some much needed down time at worst and at best she gets a new, top-notch doctor for the burn unit. Not a bad plan.

The dude ranch is a beautiful setting with mountains, trees and a beautiful lake. The setting couldn’t be more ideal. Alison found herself falling in love with the area and the people. Nick’s mom is a wonderful woman to spend time with and Alison immediately finds her to be a fun, loving woman. The other guests are incredibly welcoming especially young Sam. Sam is there with his father and sister and the three of them are trying to regain a sense of family. Sam is hampered by a leg in a brace which causes his sister to be overprotective.

When Sam runs away to prove he can take care of himself, Nick is put to the test. He has always loved working with children until he lost a special one and paid a price that was terribly high. Now his skills are called into play to help this little boy but can he find the strength to help heal Sam? Or will Sam heal Nick?

All too often we have an idea in the back of our minds of how we think a story will go simply because it usually does. With this story though, Nick is a bit of a surprise. You can see he cares for people but his fear of failing again keeps him from doing that which he loves best. Watching him struggle with that is heart wrenching but yet maddening. There were several times I wondered why Alison didn’t just shake him and tell him to snap out of it. The human heart and mind have their own path, however.

Alison is incredibly strong. She knows the risks she is taking being at the dude ranch and giving her heart to Nick. However, she sees past those risks to the potential lying below – the potential as yet untapped. But the strength doesn’t show only in her taking the risk but in her standing up for what is fair – for Nick and for herself. Alison has overcome a great deal in her life (which I will let Alison share with you) but she has kept a positive attitude.
