He’s entrusted with getting King Richard the Lion Hearted back to England, safely and secretly. It’s enough that he has his hands full with an egotistical king, Marc de Valery doesn’t need a grubby, skinny boy trailing after them, especially as he serves as a reminder that he killed the boy’s uncle.

Soraya al-Din is not only disguised as a boy, but is a spy for Saladin. She must finish the mission she and her uncle started; delivering a message to the king of England. She can present it to none other than the king himself, as there are enemies everywhere willing to kill to prevent the message from reaching King Richard. First, she must avenge her adopted uncle's death.

The only way to do so appears to be by making herself indispensable to de Valery by playing the servant to him and the monk he’s escorting to England. Once she’s killed de Valery, she’ll make her way to the king and deliver the message.

Some things are not as they seem. Secrets are brought to light. Danger lurks with every step they take. Enemies follow. Hunger and cold becomes a constant companion. It turns into a battle of wits and king to survive, to end the journey unscathed...even more so when Marc discovers the boy is really a young woman. The sparks fly...

Medieval romances have never been high on my list as favorite settings. In fact, I was reluctant to read Lynna Banning’s first foray into this time period. I’m glad I did, though. She did a beautiful job of making me forget I was immersed in the time of the Crusades, as well as piquing my curiosity.

Each character affected me in one way or another, whether it was in sympathy for Soraya, sigh-like for Marc, in exasperation and aggravation with the king, or amiably for Roger.

Crusader’s Lady maintains a high level of drama and action while blending in all the factors that consist of a good romance. Quite enjoyable.
