Rexana is in a race against time. She must retrieve the document branding her brother a traitor and destroy it before it's too late. To do so she disguises herself as a dancer to infiltrate the High Sheriff’s keep. Unfortunately for her and her brother, Rudd, time did run out. He was arrested.
Fane, the High Sheriff, the "barbarian," is immediately attracted to the dancer. She's elusive and tempting. He must have her for his own. But before he can do much more than be teased by the "little dancer" she disappears with him yet to have discovered her identity.
It's Rudd, however, during interrogation who unwittingly reveals the mysterious dancer's identity. Fane seeks Rexana out with the promise of helping Rudd. The catch? She must marry him. That worked, convinced her, when his honest declaration of love didn't.
Thus the battle begins (that's not to say it hadn't begun before this). Issues of betrayal, loyalty and trust abound. Will they be able to overcome and resolve these issues to find a lasting love?
Ms. Kean has the ability to turn a phrase, thought and description into something unique. Her use of items and the language of the time is very well blended and dispersed. It doesn't overwhelm or distract the reader.
If you enjoy a fiercely independent/strong heroine, a hero who fights for what he believes in as well as the woman he loves (I really liked Fane!), a puzzle that needs solving, layers of sexual tension, and last but not least, battles of wit then this book is for you. It has it all!
Ms. Kean will be an author to keep an eye on. Especially as her style flourishes and grows with each of her upcoming releases. Her debut novel, Dance Of Desire was enjoyable to read.
