Sara Walsh is living her life in a rather surreal way. She was actually born Sara Richman. Her father had the family living with him overseas due to his role as a United States Ambassador. Traveling wasn’t so bad though since she had a built in friend with her twin, Kimmy. Life was pretty good for them until the day came that someone thought they could get to her father by kidnapping the twins. Sara hadn’t thought of herself as the strong one, especially since she was just a child, but her part of the kidnapping quickly became that. She tried her best to make sure her twin was taken care. She talked to her, gave up her portion of the water for her, and basically did all that a young child could. In spite of all of her efforts, however, Kimmy didn’t make it. Their kidnappers left them in the root cellar they had been placed in to die. Kimmy succumbed but Sara survived. Since she lost her twin and only one of the two kidnappers was apprehended, surviving was just about all Sara did.
In her adult life, Sara became Sara Walsh and made her living as an author. She had a split personality in that role, however. The child like innocence that she so desperately wanted came through in her children’s books. The horror Sara still experienced in her dreams came through an adult series by HQ Victor. The kidnapper still made his presence known even after all of these years so she lived very quietly and always ready to run. The one saving grace for her is that the FBI agent attached to her safety was her brother, David.
She thought she had a fairly good handle on things until the day came she got stuck in an elevator. What could be worse than this - - a small, dark place with only a stranger with her. Adam Black was the stranger. Retired from a glowing sports career, Adam was used to a variety of people in his life. Sara, however, was a new challenge. He didn’t quite know what to think of her but yet didn’t want to think of her, especially since she seemed to disappear once they got off the elevator.
Dee Henderson creates a fabulous story of searching through the pain to find the dream. Dangers in the Shadows combines so many good qualities of writing – suspense, romance, dry humor, and action not to mention well-laid out scenes, characters with depth and plenty of twists and turns in the plot. I couldn’t wait to get to the end to find out who donit and how Sara and Adam resolved the pains they were each struggling with. I won’t give it away but I loved the final chapter and how Adam overcame the final hurdle!!
