Clay Montgomery is the family member living on the home farm who is protecting the secret for the entire family. The problem with that is loneliness tends to settle in and the problem with that is Clay doesn’t even really realize he is lonely. Terrible things have happened in this house that will rock not only his family but the town of Stillwater. How much longer can Clay hold it together?
Then to top it off, Allie McCormick has had to return home. Her marriage went down the drain and her child needs the best she can give her (especially since her ex wants nothing to do with either one of them). Living in a small town with Grandma and Grandpa seems to be the perfect thing for Whitney. For Allie…well, not so much. Imagine moving back to your home town (a small town at that), moving in with your parents, and going to work as a police officer for your father.
Things get complicated very quickly when Allie (who used to be a cold case detective) is asked to look into the disappearance of Reverend Lee Barker (Clay’s step father). As Allie begins to look at the case, she is finding a number of avenues she hadn’t anticipated including being attracted to the man the entire town thinks killed Reverend Barker – Clay.
There is so much more I would love to tell you about this book but I don’t want to give away any of the plot lines (keep in mind there is more than one strand being woven in this one). Now all of these strands are each a little different and a little unique; however, when woven together it creates a great story.
Now Dead Giveaway is a sequel so as someone who is following the Stillwater story and the event surrounding the disappearance of Rev. Barker, you will find this continues seamlessly and quickly draws you right back into where you left off. However, Allie and Clay stand alone as well. This is a story that you will find lays itself out well and you don’t feel like you are trying to listen to "an inside joke" as you read it.
The characters are real and have some depth to them while the mystery will keep you guessing and yet not. (How’s that for not giving it away
?) Enough said, except well done, Brenda!
