Imagine if you will that you and your siblings think your father is a bit of a doddering old fool. Now, you don’t say that out loud but what kind of man announces he is getting married (at his age) to a young widow. Not only is her past suspect but given the invitations, she obviously has no taste. All that is going to come out of this marriage is that she will cut into the inheritance that rightfully belongs to all of you. Sir Adrian Fisk has truly created an incredibly dysfunctional family – each of whom brings their own interesting quirk to the table.
Let’s further complicate this with the death of the oldest son, Ruthven. He is found in the wine cellar and Detective St. Just and Sergeant Fear are brought in to solve the case. These two officials are reminiscent of Inspector Clouseau as they work to solve the crime before any more of the family members end up in the family plot and further inheritance dollars go up for grabs.
If you are an Agatha Christie fan or a Pink Panther fan, this story is right up your alley. This is a mystery in the truest form of the word. Yes, a crime is committed but there is no blood and guts – just a true mind-tumbling who-done-it for you to solve. Malliet brings together an interesting family to work the crime around and my guess is that each of us can see a member of our own family in the mix.
