She would be better off dead than enslaved to "Old Tom" one more day. After Fannie Caldwell sees the wagon train moving through town her heart sores with excitement as she can now take her twin siblings away from the cruel slave-master Tom has always been.

Fannie knows she will never live to see another day if Tom hears she’s sneaking off with the wagon train. Especially once he realizes she’s been siphoning money from his general store. Fannie only has taken what she feels is coming to her and the twins since their indentured payment was fulfilled. Fannie has saved every penny to buy a wagon and provisions to head west with the next train until she meets the wagon master.

Blake Tanner said NO. No unmarried/unchaperoned women or children. Little did he know the trouble was just beginning when Fannie and her wagon show up determined to go west with or without Blake’s approval.

Trouble follows Fannie and like it or not, Blake always seems to be around when it happens. After many scrapes, both Fannie and Blake find it hard to admit that they have growing feelings for each other but God is working out His plan and softening their defiant hearts.

Defiant Heart tells the tale of two strong, independent people determined to persevere no matter what God has planned for them. This story was just as well written as Distant Heart, Book 2 in the series. It filled in missing detail of the hardships the characters endured. The inspirational message was subtle introducing Fannie and Blake to God’s love.

Tracy’s Bateman’s writing is concise but with enough detail to place the reader at the scene. I’ve enjoyed both books by Ms Bateman and highly recommend the Westward Hearts series.
