It’s the year 2018 and life has dramatically changed for the worse. There is economic upheaval and Lucifer has increased the number of demons he has released in all major cities. It is up to the demon trappers to catch the demons and dispose of them. Atlanta’s local Trappers Guild is in need of all the help it can get. They even go so far as to recruit seventeen-year-old Riley, daughter of legendary demon trapper Paul Blackthorne. It is extremely rare for the Trappers Guilds to recruit women but decide to give her a chance to follow in the footsteps of her father. As an apprentice Riley is only allowed to go after the lesser demons and to never go after the bigger ones until she has gone through her apprenticeship.
As Riley is called in to rid the local library of a lesser demon, she is attacked by a Grade Five Geo-Fiend (the highest level demon under the Archdemons that can cause earthquakes, tornadoes, etc.). Riley escapes but realizes the demon calls her by name. Having a demon know you is not good and Riley goes to her dad for help. Her dad tells her not to hunt demons alone and goes out to hunt. Little does Riley know that this will be the last conversation she has with her father. As Paul is demon hunting, the demon that attacked his daughter appears. After an intense battle the demon attacks and kills Paul. Now Riley must get all the information and help she can and hunt down the demon that killed her father before she finds herself six feet under.
I really am quite pleased at seeing the new generation of paranormals that are emerging. This book is such a great introduction for teens wanting to explore the paranormal genre. It has great fight scenes that aren’t really graphic but have the elements of good vs. evil. It has a wonderful message in Riley’s story. It shows that no matter who you are or your particular circumstances, you can still overcome those obstacles and be a help to others. Fans of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s The Chronicles of Nick will embrace this series with open arms. It has a lot of the same qualities and the characters of Riley and Nick are very similar. This is definitely a great addition to any teen’s reading list.
