She’s always enjoyed being on the fringes of the investigations, providing spies with useful, yet secret inventions to aid them in the field. She’d even become an expert at decoding missives. Yet when her friend and fellow spy, Emily, is severely injured, the widowed Anastasia Whittig finds herself partnered with Lucas Tyler to investigate the murders and attacks on the Crown’s spies.

Not only is Ana shy and unsure of herself, Lucas makes no secret that he has doubts, too. And that hurts. But worse than that, he sees too much, he makes her feel too much. It’s a betrayal to her husband and something she can’t forgive herself for.

Lucas has been on the case for over a year. If he hasn’t made any progress in that time, what makes his superiors think a woman, one who has never been in the field, is going to make the difference in cracking the case? Not only does she have some harebrained ideas and theories concerning the case, he’s become wildly attracted to her.

Both Ana and Lucas have things working against them. They can’t seem to agree on the direction to take their investigation, though danger lurks all around them. Lucas adamantly discounts her theories. Ana can’t forget her dead husband nor her loyalty to him. Neither of them can seem to control their thoughts and feelings about the other.

Hopefully they can overcome all these obstacles and see their love for what it is and catch the traitor before any more spies are murdered or injured.

I’ve never been fond of "spy" stories, however, Ms. Petersen’s second in the Lady Spy series captured my attention. It was a rich blend of detail, characters, and intrigue. The characters were perfect for each other and the internal and external conflicts blended very well with the personal and business aspects of the story.

If you’re one for a lot of character back-story, you won’t find an overwhelming bit of it here. But take heart, it is there, sometimes in compact detail and sometimes subtly. Any more than what was given would have overshadowed the plot.

Between the pages of Desire Never Dies, you’ll find much more than passion and suspense. The more depends on how well you read between the lines and how connected to the characters and story you become.
