The information and trivia on the TV characters in the Desperate Housewives Cookbook is fun and interesting, as is information on housewives through history.
All recipes are easy to follow with the steps clearly defined. However, even though the recipes are fairly uncomplicated and for the everyday cook, the cook who likes to try new recipes without having to add to or alter the shopping list too much, they sadly left much to be desired.
Two families tried a number of recipes from this cookbook.
Here are the recipes Tina tried:
Slow Cooker Pot Roast--Very easy. The roast tasted great but we didn’t like the flavor of the gravy at all.
Potato Casserole--It was easy. It did take an extra 20 minutes for the casserole to cook. Not a favorite.
Irresistible Brownies--Easy. Baked them for an extra 20 minutes. Wonderful! Loved them. The book is worth this recipe alone.
Banana Walnut Bread--No flavor at all!!!
Here are the recipes Connie tried:
Fallen Apple Soufflé Cake--Surprisingly tasty. Best the first day.
Rocky Road Sweet Potatoes--Votes were divided. It was "ok" but no one is eager for this to be made again anytime soon.
Blueberry Muffins--Pretty good. Better the first day. A bit on the bland side, especially the second day as the orange rind flavor seemed to dissipate.
Sloppy Joes, Two Ways--Easy. On the spicy hot side, and underneath, once you get past the spice, it’s simply tastes like ground round and macaroni (I made it the second way).
Easy or Easier Coleslaw--Very easy. Fairly tasty.
Herb and Lemon Roasted Chicken--My expectations were high on this one. I was very disappointed.
Vanilla Pudding--Despite a full Tbsp of "real" vanilla, it was flavorless, with an aftertaste of the cornstarch thickener.
As you can see, we sampled a variety of recipes, most of which were unsatisfying. Now that we’ve tried the recipes exactly as written, perhaps we’ll take a few and experiment with them. Add our own touches. Maybe then these recipes will find their way to the table more often.
