Kathy Callahan is the last surviving member of the Divorced, Desperate and Delicious club. She’s thrilled with her status and really doesn’t want to change it. Her girlfriends from the club gave up their vows of chastity and got married and got pregnant. Now they’re hoping to change Kathy’s mind by hooking her up with Stan Bradley. Kathy’s been flirting with Stan for a few years and her friends convince her to try seducing him.

Too bad Kathy’s seduction is interrupted by some bad guys trying to kill both of them. Stan kidnaps Kathy and whisks her away trying to keep her alive. Turns out Stan isn’t really a plumber…or a Stan for that matter. He’s really Luke Hunter and he’s been posing as Stan because he’s in the Witness Protection Program. The trial he is to testify for is in a week and the bad guys have apparently found him out. Now it’s a matter of staying alive until he can get to a safe house with Kathy. Will they manage to stay alive? If they live, will Kathy ever trust Stan/Luke again?

Kathy is a complex woman and I really liked that about her. She’s been badly hurt by her ex. He left her for TOW (The Other Woman) who was his secretary. It’s bad enough to be thrown over for a TOW, but this woman is old and eats prunes to keep regular. Not the younger model most men go for. Kathy has other unresolved issues from her past and she doesn’t trust many people and her trust takes a long while to earn. Finding out Stan/Luke had been lying about who he is came as a big blow to her feelings for him. Even though he did it to stay alive, she’s not ready to move past the lie portion of his life.

Luke has wanted to get closer to Kathy for three years. He has his own unresolved issues from the past and when he went undercover to lead this sting, he felt he had nothing left in life to live for. It was this attitude that got him the kind of information needed to bring down the operation. Now that he’d like to live and maybe try a life with Kathy, he’s on the run for his life and knows that he’ll be whisked away from Kathy as soon as he makes it to a safe house. His future is going down the toilet fast and now that Kathy is finally with him in body, she’s pulled away mentally. Besides, running from mobsters isn’t conducive to romance.

The story is a mystery and filled with car chases and gunfights. But, Christie Craig adds enough comedic moments to keep the story from becoming to heavy. It breaks up the tension and helps keep the story moving. She also spices up the romance and the sex moves from hot innuendoes to hot and heavy in the sheets. While this is the third in the series, it stands alone nicely. We meet characters from previous books, but they are seamlessly woven into the story. I especially loved Joey, the gangster with a conscience. He really added a lot to the story and I’d love to see a book about him in the future.

Overall, it was a fun and sexy read. There was enough mystery and suspense to give the story depth and enough sexy and funny moments to make the book zing. I thought it was a good escape from the old man winter, as Christie Craig will heat up your cold winter nights!
