Beth McCellen was on her way home to attend her sister, Mandy’s wedding when they come upon a stagecoach wreckage. As a nurse, Beth is dedicated to helping those injured. But her knowledge and strength (which is great) is not enough to ease the pain of some of them. What she soon learns, and is shocked to discover, is that the idiot traveling with her is a doctor.

Dr. Alex Buchanan is not a doctor. Alex is an army deserter, has lived through war and seen enough blood, gore and death to keep him in nightmares (awake or asleep) for a couple of lifetimes. His courage to be a doctor has run out. . .until Beth starts yelling at him!

Beth has the strength that Alex needs to keep his sanity (most of the time), steady his hands and help the sick and injured. As long as Beth is right by his side, Alex can pull on her courage and strength to once again be the doctor he always hoped to be.

Love soon grows even though Beth thinks he’s an idiot (but loves him anyway) and Alex thinks she has the courage of a saint. They both realize they are stronger together as long as God gives them strength. But Alex is a deserter, a hunted man and there are those who would rather bring these cowards in dead rather than alive.

Alex wants to leave Beth and finally turn himself in but Beth will stand by him through good times and bad. Will Beth and Alex have enough courage and strength to face what’s to come? Can God turn even these dire circumstances for good?

By the way, Mandy and her not so much of a husband, Sidney have left Texas and end up in Montana. Lies and deceit follow Sidney and Mandy works harder then ever to make them a home. Mandy starts to resent Sidney and Sidney finds gold which goes to his head. Will God protect Mandy and protect Sidney from Mandy?

As with all of Mary Connealy’s books I’ve read, Doctor in Petticoats is a fast-moving entertaining story featuring a talented, strong, independent heroine that knows how to survive in the rugged, wild west. But Beth is so much more; she is sensitive, tender and compassionate able to understand Alex’s grueling past and how she can help in his times of need.

An encore cast from Mary’s two previous series, Lassoed in Texas and Montana Marriages make appearances and adds a sparkle to the story. Doctor in Petticoats will touch each emotion by mixing humor, the LOL kind, with subtle inspiration, throwing in other strong yet caring characters to give the reader a story hard to put down and wanting more when you come to the end. Lucky for us there are at least two more books in the series!
