Raina Bowen is a tough as nails truck driver living in the aftermath of a massive world war that has left her part of the planet a cold and barren wasteland.
She has two goals. One, deliver her cargo to its destination so she can win a large interdollar prize, one that will allow her to properly care for her newly discovered sister. Two, destroy the one man in the world who holds her demons; Duncan Bane. Bane tortured Raina as a child, and she wants him to pay.
Raina is on a mission and the last thing she needs is a distraction, especially a distraction in the form of a sexy, emotion free man like Wizard. But, what we need and what we get are not always the same thing, right? Or, maybe what we need is not always obvious until it’s right in front of our faces.
When Wizard and Raina meet, there are definitely sparks but not of the romantic variety, at least not at first. Wizard, raised in very unusual circumstances, is not used to feeling or expressing emotion of any kind, and Raina has a problem with his cold indifference, although she’s not terribly experienced with emotion either. When Raina and Wizard finally have to join forces to take down Bane, things heat up in all kinds of ways.
Until recently I had never been a fan of sci-fi and futuristic stories. After reading some J.D. Robb and C.J. Barry, the genre has become much more appealing to me, and Driven is another book to add to the list of fast paced, sexy, futuristic romance novels in my collection.
Raina and Wizard start out in The Northern Waste, a cold nightmarish place that, to me, makes Alaska seem tropical. Raina has dreams of living in the Equatorial Band, which is the tropics of the time, but she has many challenges ahead before she can live a settled life. I was intrigued by this "alternate" universe and reading about how people survived in such a bleak existence but wished I could have known when the story took place. Even so, Eve Kenin has a creative mind and told a compelling story of a time that has yet to exist and made it seem very real.
The hot and steamy took a while to reveal itself in this book, but once it did, hot and steamy doesn’t describe the passion and chemistry Wizard and Raina shared.
Driven is action packed and fast paced while still telling a passionate and romantic tale. I enjoyed the book and am anxious to read more of this type of story in the future as well as check out other offerings by Eve Kenin (Silver).
