She had been enamored with Nico Fierezza for as long as she worked for him. But one brief, heated encounter with him at an office party changed everything for Carrie Evans. All too soon she learned that she was nothing more to him than a distraction. A willing distraction.

Once she found out she was pregnant, Carrie went to great lengths to travel to Niroli to tell Nico he was to become a father. No matter the relationship between them, she wanted her child to feel secure and loved.

Unfortunately Nico doesn’t believe her. How dare she claim he’s to be a father when he knows for a fact he’s not the father? What game is she playing?

Nico made his feelings very clear. With that in mind she had planned to leave, travel back to London for good, but circumstances bade her to stay on Niroli for the time being. Circumstances which cause Carrie to see herself in a different light and builds on her shaky confidence.

The change in Carrie is obvious to Nico. It both intrigues him and frustrates him. Will he have to do a bit of changing, too? He may be on top of the game in the boardroom and in his office, but his take charge, you’ll do it my way approach doesn’t seem to be getting him anywhere with Carrie. Something’s got to give…they can’t keep running hot and cold with each other.

I found Carrie to be a sympathetic yet endearing character--from insecure to determined. Nico on the other hand was a bit more mysterious. While there were several things revealed about him, we didn’t see the inner Nico very often.

A bit of head-hopping made the reading slightly jarring at times; to be in one character’s thoughts at a possible important--to the character--moment, and then be transferred to another’s point of view...but it all worked out nicely in the end.

Susan Stephens has a handle on creating fictional, larger than life characters and places that are mingled with enough realism to connect the reader to the story. Expecting His Royal Baby has the right blend of emotion and growth with sparks thrown in to give the story an edge.
