General Dominic Raikes has returned from the battlefield to Firehame, his father’s home. His father is Lord Mor’ded who is an elven man. The elven lords fled their home in Elfhame hundreds of years ago. They have taken England and split it into seven territories. Through the centuries, they have mated with slaves and have half-breed children. These half-breeds are used along with the humans of England to fight their wars. The Elven Lords fight their war games to see who can steal the king. Their power is unimaginable and their magic has made the rest of the world turn a blind eye to the plight of the people.
Dominic’s father believes there still might be enough magic in his son to make him powerful enough to become a lord. However, every time he tests Dominic with fire, Dominic is unable to call forth the powerful black fire. Returning to Firehame with the king should be enough to please his father. Unfortunately, nothing pleases Lord Mor’ded. Dominic is then reminded that he is to be wed to the beautiful Lady Cassandra. She has been raised at a monastery and is the perfect submissive wife…too bad she’s out to kill one of her new family members.
Lady Cassandra has been recruited by the Rebellion. The Rebellion are a group of citizens and half-breeds who wish to overthrow the Elven Lords and reclaim their people, their country and their personal freedoms. So far, the Rebellion has been unsuccessful because of the powerful magic wielded by the Lords. But Lady Cassandra has been trained for years as an assassin. She is somewhat magical, but not enough to be considered a threat. She has the gift of dancing and has even been trained in using the death dance. Her goal is to keep her marriage going long enough to kill her father-in-law…and her husband, if needed.
Cassandra has trouble figuring out how to fit in at Firehame. While her new husband comes to her bed each night and fuels an unimaginable passion, he treats her like dirt during the light of day. She’s troubled by his elven lack of feelings since his passion flames so high at night.
In the meantime, Dominic has never been so sorely tempted. He feels truly alive in Cassandra’s presence. But his father has taken away every thing and everyone that he has ever had feelings toward. In order to keep her alive, he must pretend that his wife is meaningless to him.
Can these star-crossed lovers ever reveal the truth to each other? Can anyone successfully stop an Elven Lord?
Riveting. The story kept me on the edge of my seat from the first to the last pages. Just when you think you know what will occur next, Kathryne Kennedy throws another twist into the story. Who could ever believe that someone as sweet and demure as Cassandra is trained to be a cold-blooded killer?
Then there’s Dominic. He's a strong and proud man who has never been treated as more than an annoying fly by his sire. He’s never been treated as having any real value, yet he still remains compassionate towards others and never gives up hope. If only he could find the black fire that he believes is inside his body.
The supporting characters add nice balance to the story. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series. I have a hunch who will be our heroine and I’m thrilled to hear the rest of her story told. Kathryne Kennedy has a magical gift for taking our reality and adding an infusion of magic to move her stories out of this world. Make room on your keeper shelves, Kathryne Kennedy’s newest series is on the way.
