Dear Readers:

We begin our story on Magnolia Drive…I can’t wait until the end of the review to let you all know that I absolutely LOVED this book. This will be one of the very few that I keep on my bookcases so that I can pick it up and immerse myself all over again.

A little background: Our story begins in the summer of 1974 with Kate Mularkey. Now Kate is a girl we’ve all know (not to mention a girl we’ve all been!) She is an eight-grade social outcast. To add insult to injury, the "coolest girl in the whole wide world," Tully Hart, moves across the road from her. I know, we can see where this is going. But, no. The magic begins. The cool girl wants nothing more than to be Kate’s friend. Completely opposite on the outside (Kate has loving parents who support her, Tully has a fool who would much rather smoke a lot of "happy stuff" instead of paying any attention to her daughter.)

The writer takes us through their time together by splitting up the decades. First, we go through the seventies with the young girls as they try with all their might to break free and become young women. We find a lot more out about Tully and the trials she will have to face when she grows up. On through the Eighties we watch as this friendship grows and stays through jobs, men, and plain old hurt. (I believe I liked this section the most because I could really relate.) We escape the eighties a little worse for wear and throw ourselves into the nineties – a time where the children inside them are long gone but the pain isn’t.

I know I’m sounding very vague with this review – and I mean to be vague. Why? Because you all HAVE to read this. The writing is so good, the story so lovely and the friendship so fantastic that every word should be savored – not dissected down to its "bare bones." In addition, I have been a fan of Ms. Hannah’s for almost two decades and I must say this book not only touched me as a great work of fiction, but I also found it to be a poignant personal journey for the author and for many of her readers.

Curl up on the sofa and pray for a rainy day so that you can sit for hours and enjoy!

Amy
