The pounds have crept back on James Henry and his friends Lindy, Lucy, Bennett, and Gillian (aka the Flab Five). They’re all aware of it, it’s just their motivation has waned. How fortuitous that James and Lindy happen to meet the owner of the new Witness to Fitness weight loss center, Veronica Levitt. She strongly encourages them to join, promising them they’ll be happier and healthier.
Shortly after the friends make the decision to join Witness to Fitness things start to go wrong...
For instance the new ice cream parlor goes up in smoke and a dead body is found amongst the rubble. Was someone wanting to shut Chilly Willy’s down or was someone after poor dead Pete Vandercamp? Perhaps there was another motive?
Things at the Witness for Fitness meetings are questionable, too. Is Ronnie for real? How can someone as thin as a "praying mantis" be that cheerful? Does she really have their healthy best interest at heart?
In the midst of these questions James Henry is trying to get the nerve to tell Lucy how he feels about her. He’s also putting on a Spring Fling fundraiser to buy new computers for the library as well as deal with his irascible father.
Perhaps James will find the courage to approach Lucy and just maybe the friends will break the case open…before it’s too late for any of them.
How refreshing to get to know characters whose bodies are imperfect, whose love for food is a daily struggle, whose self-confidence needs a boost now and then. Characters many readers can empathize with and cheer for and watch grow.
This is the perfect read for the faint of heart and/or conservative reader. The culmination of facts and clues interspersed with James and the Flab Five’s lives blend into an enjoyable cozy mystery.
Fit to Die is part of a series with many interesting characters and possibilities for books yet to come.
