Four friends in Cincinnati graduate from college and celebrate their freedom. They have big dreams and plans for what the future holds for them. On a drunken whim they decide to trust fate and the turn of a card as to whether they stay in Cincinnati or go to Hollywood and follow their dreams.
When they arrive in Hollywood they soon learn that they have to be prepared to settle for less in order to work their way up for more. Like any dream, the road is not at easy one and the women’s friendship is tested. There is a price for ambition and the girls learn this along the way.
I found it really hard to warm to any of the characters in Four of Hearts. I found them brash and not particularly likeable. Their choices of careers – actor, director, writer, and stand up comedian – all seemed to me very stereotypical. But then Hollywood is a stereotypical place so the characters obviously fit into their surroundings.
Four of Hearts does show the realistic and plastic side to Hollywood glamour and the fact that not everyone will make it. I liked that aspect. It’s a story about how people’s vulnerabilities can make or break them and how they deal with the consequences. The darker issues of suicide, drugs and drink were portrayed honestly.
Four of Hearts is about living life on the draw of a card. If you like the glamour of Hollywood and reading about people struggling to realize their dreams then you will like this book.
