Elizabeth Westbrook has traveled west under the ruse that photography is a hobby and she wants to capture the majestic landscapes and wildlife. The truth that she is determined to get the job of photographer and journalist at the Washington (D.C.) Chronicle is kept secret as she feels people would treat her differently and she wouldn’t be able to gain the information she needs to write these articles.
Daniel Ranslett is known around the territory as the best hunter and tracker in the area and knows the mountains better than anyone. He’ll do almost anything to protect and preserve these mountains. Daniel also is tormented by his past life as a Confederate soldier and sharpshooter. He can’t come to terms with the fact that he let his mother and brother down as his brother died in his arms during the battle near Franklin, TN.
To gain the position at the newspaper, Elizabeth is determined to hire Daniel to take her to the Cliff Dwellings in Mesa Verde. She’s sure this would clinch to job. Daniel hesitantly agrees. He knows Elizabeth is hiding something but his biggest fear is this trip will somehow reveal his secrets.
As Elizabeth and Daniel travel together through the mountains, secrets are revealed but more importantly their feelings for each other are growing. God seems to be leading both of them in the path He would have for them. But will their secrets stop them from seeing God’s leading? Can they overlook the past and see the best that God has for both of them?
Tamera Alexander is one of my favorite authors. She is extremely talented in how she paints the scenes so vividly you think you’re there watching the story unfold. The story as well as her characters is written with depth as you can feel the emotions they are experiencing. As Elizabeth’s strong-will and independence dominates her character in the beginning, admirably she comes to understand how these characteristics are perceived and looks to God to help her change.
Every Tamera Alexander story is so enjoyable it will keep you turning the pages and From a Distance is no exception. Just as I have, I’m sure you’ll enjoy every aspect of the story and will look forward to the next book in the Timber Ridge Reflections Series.
