The small, peaceful island of Paradise is locked in the clutches of a strange crime spree, beginning with the mysterious death of Gabrielle Long’s great aunt, along with the disappearance of her antique golden bowl. Gabrielle, who is now owner of her aunt’s B&B and trustee of the family’s now missing heirloom, finds herself quickly caught up in a web of lies, stories and cover-ups. A mysterious boarder at the B&B suddenly turns up dead in the river and Gabrielle was the last person to see him alive. Unfortunately, she can’t remember any details about the night he vanished and the antique bowl disappeared.

To top her troubles off, she shares a personal history with the man next door who has recently signed on to be the B&B’s chef – the enchanting and delectable, Cornell Price. Cornell’s great uncle and Gabrielle’s great aunt had lived as neighbors for over fifty years – fought like cats and dogs every day – and slept in each other’s arms every night. Cornell and Gabby are both warned by their family to stay away from each other and not repeat their kin’s mistakes. But, no matter how hard they try, the passion between them continues to build, as the mystery unfolds.

The diversity of the characters that are brought into this story is fantastic. Crazy aunts, nosy kin, strange guests that lurk in the corners of the B&B, even a meek next door neighbor who likes to stack her freezer with the body of a man who did her wrong. These people, in a word, are fun. Golden Night is a great first step in what I think will be an excellent trilogy. A whodunit mixed with the story of real love succeeding against all odds. Side note: Essential to the plot is a lovely story that is told in bits and pieces throughout. It is a genealogical story that offers Gabby the history of her tough ancestor who risked it all to hold onto the golden bowl. A fun read.
