Paige McKaslin has lived her entire life for everyone else in her family. When she was a newly married woman with a small child of her own, she had to assume the care of her younger siblings. Her husband couldn’t stand being a father to one let alone part of the entire thing – well, let’s face it, he wasn’t ready to be an adult. So, Paige is now single, raising a child of her own and finishing helping her siblings.

To do this, she is running the family’s diner. This really isn’t the life she would have dreamed of but it is the life she is leading. She isn’t complaining about it and just takes each day as it comes. However, a lifetime of this has made her very protective of family and not very able to take help for herself. She has sworn off men all together because of the first husband so she is okay living each day and trying not to worry about tomorrow.

Evan Thornton is a single father who now has time on his hands. His wife left when their sons were young and never looked back. However, he had no complaints about bringing them up. It was a challenge but yet kept him busy, entertained and not worrying about the next day. Anything but lonely.

Now both boys are in college and he has a lot of time on his hands and because he doesn’t like to cook for one he eats a lot of meals at the diner. Evan finds himself there are the times when things need fixing – like water leaks, roof leaks, etc. Little problem developing here, neither one fully trusts the opposite sex, neither one is used to receiving help and neither one can stop thinking about the other one. Interesting mixture.

Jillian Hart has created some very real characters. These are two people who are carrying a lot of baggage on their shoulders and are just sure that they are the only ones who can shoulder that load. She illustrates the frustrations of the human heart as it wants to be loved but is butting up against the human mind who insists on doing everything for itself.

Handful of Heaven is a sweet story of two every day people who discover there is more to life than what you thought you had been given.
