When Maddie Grade was a small child she and her sister Laura were sold by their no-account uncle. Separated from her sister, Maddie was taken by a man who made his livelihood off the children he collected in his "tribe". Maddie was taught to beg, steal and lie, among other things, to survive among her "family". Now that she’s older, things have changed and are about to change even more.

Tom Abbott, a Pinkerton agent has been hired by Laura to find her sister. Tom had been searching for a while with little to go on. By chance while working on a kidnapping case Tom comes across Maddie. Tom knows Maddie is keeping secrets, besides any information on the missing child, but there’s something about her that draws Tom.

Maddie being indirectly involved in the kidnapping is wary of the Pinkerton. But she’s desperate; in order to better herself she needs money and decides she may be able to use the child to claim the reward.

Through their chasing and being chased adventures, Maddie and Tom and drawn together. As a member of law enforcement Tom is determined to see justice done, no matter what the cost. But there is something about Maddie besides their attraction, though he can’t put his finger on it that makes him think she’s Laura’s long-lost sister.

The absurdity that Maddie could have a true sister is hard for her to believe. She doesn’t know it but God is pulling at her heart as she becomes more involved with Tom. Will Maddie be able to give up the lies and all that’s familiar and take the chance of belonging to a real family? Can Tom look beyond the right or wrong of the situation and listen to his heart? And what becomes of the missing child?

It appears that Ms Landis has put her heart and soul into this series. Heart of Lies is a powerful story that will tug at your heart and draw on your emotions. Ms Landis’ creative writing is evident from the first word to the last. The descriptions are painted with just the right amount of detail for he reader to watch the story unfold. The plot and characters have a depth that draws the reader in from the first page. Maddie and Laura’s heartbreaking past gives the reader insight into how they’ve become the characters they are.

The Irish Angel Series will cause the reader to run the gamut of emotions. The passion of the characters, plot and series will stay with you well after the reading is over. I definitely look forward to the next book in the series.
