Essie Spreckelmeyer’s independence and slightly impulsive ways were well known throughout Corsicana, Texas. She really didn’t care too much what people thought of her independent ways. Heartbreak had left her determined to live a full life without a man, relying on God for her needs. As owner and co-chair of the local bicycle club and co-owner and working boss of Sullivan Oil her life was full – until Tony Bryant came to town.
Tony Bryant Morgan’s father had passed away disinheriting him leaving Morgan Oil and the entire estate to his older half brother. Determined to work "from the ground up" in the oil business and make his own fortune, Tony seeks a job at Sullivan Oil. Little did he know to be hired he had to go through the owner’s daughter.
Essie thought Tony Bryant (he didn’t want the Spreckelmeyer’s to know he was from the competition) was handsome, charming and a little too sure of himself. Essie knew what trouble a charming man could be so she tried to stay clear of Tony. But Tony thought Essie was fascinating even with all her independent and bossy ways.
Circumstances keep throwing Essie and Tony together and soon their feelings begin to grow for each other. They are about to move their relationship to the next step but Tony has to tell her who he really is and Essie has to tell him about her past. Before they can get everything worked out Tony’s brother comes to town and throws everything into chaos. God has plans for Essie and Tony but they have to trust Him to get them through their differences and the chaos.
Deeanne Gist has written a romance that will touch your heart. Her research into the early oil industry is impeccable. Essie and Tony’s story has inspiration, a little mystery and a lot of romance. The characters struggle between being human and waiting on God’s direction. This is the same struggle that most of us have when our human emotions get in the way of God’s plans.
Deep in the Heart of Trouble wraps up Essie’s story very nicely. It has a little bit of everything, a well rounded story that will make you laugh, cry and cheer for Tony and Essie. If you liked Courting Trouble, you’ll love the sequel.
