Lisle MacHugh, a widow after Culloden, is left to look after her husband's daughters and his elderly relatives with little means of support-- their situation is becoming very dire. When Langston Leed Monteith, the black Monteith, aids Lisle in escaping the English, she is surprised and fears he has ulterior motives. Langston is immediately smitten with the beautiful and passionate Lisle and determines to make her his wife. Unfortunately, Langston is considered a coward and a traitor, because of his "aid" to the English, but appearances can be deceptive.

Heat of the Knight is an adventurous, historical romance, with a hero, who reminds me of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Langston, on the surface, appears to be unemotional and cold but, in reality, is tortured and vulnerable. There is an especially poignant scene, in which, Langston cries over the loss of his horse. While Langston's deceptions to Lisle are, at times, annoying, I understood his motivations. The main quibble, that I have with the book is the point of view change is, at times, abrupt, and to get the gist of the story, I had to reread a portion of the text. Other than this minor quibble, Heat of the Knight is a compelling, exciting read, which I recommend.
