Her boyfriend, Rob Peterson, is running for the House of Representatives. He’s powerful and charming. And abusive. When no one takes her claims of abuse seriously, not even the law or her parents, Anna Metzger knows she has to get away.
With no thoughts but her own safety, of hiding, Anna shows up on Kate Brenneman’s doorstep. A B&B in Amish country is the perfect place to hide, blend in. What she didn’t count on was developing feelings for Kate’s brother, Henry, or the internal self-examination that ensues and what she learns from both.
Once, if possible, she finds a way to free herself from Rob Peterson she’ll have to choose. The world of the English or Amish. Her old life or Henry. Will her soul searching have been for naught?
This story moved at a fast pace. Sometimes a bit too fast as days was skipped, self-growth was achieved, situations happened, much of which wasn’t visible, all leaving a slight feeling of disconnect between the reader and characters. But none of that made the story any less enjoyable. It would be remiss of me not to point out that the important moments in Anna and Henry’s lives, within that time frame, were vividly written.
Hidden was an enjoyable debut. Shelley Shepard Gray has a bright future. I’ll certainly be watching for Kate’s story.
