First of all, let me assure all readers out there that while this book is connected to Ms. London’s other stories, it stands alone without a problem. I have not read the other books in this trilogy---yet. I’m in the process of getting them after reading Highlander in Love.
Mared Lockhart is quite a contradiction from many typical Scottish heroines. She is stubborn and hardheaded and just a little bit mouthy. I loved her. She has a great sense of humor that had me chuckling. The Lockhart family has despised the Douglas family for generations (think Hatfield’s & McCoy’s in medieval Scotland). So when Mared is to marry Payton Douglas to repay a family debt, she chooses to become his housekeeper instead. Then the sparks really begin to fly.
The story has some very sensual scenes in it that leave the reader breathless. Ms. London writes with a style that draws the reader into the scene. I found the book to be totally enjoyable from cover to cover. I was never bored when I was reading it and the story did flow well. The only downfall to Highlander in Love is that when I was done reading and walked away from the book, it wasn’t a memorable story. I usually find myself thinking about the characters and their situations for several days after I finish a book. With this book, when I was done and I walked away, it was out of my mind. I didn’t spend any time wondering about the characters and what would happen to them in the future. This doesn’t affect the quality of the story or the enjoyment of the book. I just found myself left with the impression of a good book, funny parts and some very sensual scenes.
I want to make sure you know that I had fun reading Highlander in Love and really do want to read more of Ms. London’s work. She does have a great writing style that employs humor--which I love. Ms. London has been on the USA Today bestselling author list before and I think she’ll be there again with Highlander in Love.
Highlander Unbound and Highlander in Disguise are the prior titles in the series.
