It is London, 1815, Viscount Lucas Deverall has returned from the war. At a New Years party he is attending, he is instantly attracted to the charms of a particular lady. Problem is that lady is his wife Sophie and he does not even realize it. After all it’s been six years since he last saw her and they did not part on good terms.

The last time Sophie had seen her husband was when he had been forced to marry her after he had drunkenly stumbled into her bed instead of that of his intended paramour. Lucas seems to think Sophie had trapped him into marriage. Although she has loved Deverall for the longest time, Sophie has her pride.

Convention decreed they married but Lucas’s accusations and Sophie need for independence kept them apart. But now suddenly he is back in her life and Sophie is not at all pleased that the Toad, as she calls him, is issuing orders. Just who does this arrogant man think he is? Sophie does not need him. She has inherited great wealth and independence and she isn’t about to become the dutiful wife. But then, is there more to Lucas’s sudden interest in her? Does her sudden wealth and his lack of funds have anything to do with his attraction to her?

Lucas is determined to seduce his wife. Despite the fact he stills feels he was trapped into an unwanted marriage, the woman Sophie has become intrigues him. He is also interested that she is prepared to go out of her way to avoid him. Sophie does have a plan and that is to make Lucas’s pursuit of her impossible. Lucas knows this and he has a counter plan.

There is also a secondary story within His Majesty, Prince of Toads which is just as interesting as the pursuit of Sophie by Lucas. Lord Carstairs and Lady Minerva, their friends, have a romance of their own. It was sweet and added extra depth to the story.

I loved the characters of Sophie and Lucas. She is a woman that is not about to settle for second best. I also liked the fact that in an age where women were chattels, Sophie has great independence and options. That she chooses what her heart desires as opposed to society’s rules is refreshing. As for Lucas he is pure passionate predator who has every intention of pursuing and winning the woman he calls his wife. I loved the mind games and schemes the two come up with to thwart the other’s plans. I love a good mind game. I also found Sophie’s attempts to escape Lucas really funny. There is great humor in this book.

His Majesty, Prince of Toads reminded me of a Georgette Heyer novel with a modern twist. There is great romance, torrid passion and incredible misunderstanding as all the characters try to sort out the feelings and emotions that are stirred up between them all. Okay, so I loved this book. If you want a book with it all, read it.
